    Shikhar Dhawan Early Career

Shikhar Dhawan began playing and training at 12 under the guidance of Taraka Sinha. He trained at the Sonnet Club during his formative years. At first, he was a wicket-keeper batsman but began playing purely as a batsman by the time he got selected for the U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Dhawan began playing for the Delhi U-16 team and rose through the ranks at a rate of knots, thanks in part to a string of consistent performances for the side. He made his debut for the Delhi U-16 side during the 1999/00 season. A year later, he was the highest scorer in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 2000/01 as Delhi managed to reach the final.

Shikhar Dhawan played for India U-19 during the 2004 edition of the ICC Men’s U-19 World Cup. Dhawan was the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 505 runs at an average of 84. He scored three (3) centuries and a fifty during the tournament. His aggressive style of play is what made him an instant fan-favorite. But that’s not all. He can also provide the necessary stability to the inning. Shikar’s ability to rotate the strike is underrated. The long opening partnerships that he formed with his fellow openers such as Rohit Sharma are a result of his ability to keep the scoreboard moving.

After his exploits in the U-19 Cricket World Cup, he made his first-class debut for Delhi against Andhra Pradesh. Dhawan finished the tournament with 461 runs in six (6) matches.

    IPL

Shikhar Dhawan’s IPL career began when he played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League. He had a fairly consistent season with the Daredevils and scored as many as four (4) half-centuries. Dhawan played for the Mumbai Indians as part of the 2009 IPL (as part of a trade deal). The Hyderabad franchise then bought him as one of its prominent Indian players. He remained one of the Hyderabad franchise’s most consistent performers. In 2019, he was traded to the Delhi Capitals.

    Team India Breakthrough

In 2010, the team’s selection committee decided to field a second-string side in the ODI series against Australia. Both teams played only a single game as part of the series as the remaining ODI fixtures got washed out due to rain. Shikhar Dhawan’s ODI debut came against the West Indies at Port of Spain, where he could only make 5 runs before being dismissed. Dhawan’s big break in ODIs came when he was asked to open the innings with Rohit Sharma during the 2013 edition of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy in the UK.

Shikhar Dhawan was the tournament’s highest scorer with 363 runs at an average of over 90. He played an instrumental role in his side’s triumphant Champions Trophy campaign. Similarly, he was the highest run-getter for India during the 2015 edition of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. He finished the tournament with 412 runs from eight games. Over the years, he has become one of the most consistent performers for the country in both the limited-over formats.

Preparations for T20 World Cup 2021

Shikhar Dhawan is considered a veteran in the current Indian side at present. However, KL Rahul’s rise as an opener in the shortest format of the game has left Dhawan with limited opportunities. He was asked to captain the side in 2021 (Tour of Sri Lanka) after several ‘A-Grade’ cricketers flew to England to take part in a 5-match Test Series. He has also been performing consistently for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. During the 2020 season of the IPL, he became the first player in the history of the Indian Premier League to score two consecutive centuries. Shikhar Dhawan’s IPL journey is a symbol of consistency and hard work. He began the 2021 season of the IPL with a bang, but the tournament got postponed in the wake of the rising COVID-19 cases in the country. Shikhar Dhawan’s IPL 2021 would provide him with a chance to cement his place in India’s Twenty20 side ahead of the ICC Men’s World T20 in the UAE and Oman.
